Ubiquisys demonstrates first commercial-grade 3G HSPA home femtocell system at 3GSM World Congress
BARCELONA, Spain, 12 February 2007: Ubiquisys Ltd, the developer of intelligent mass-market wireless femto access points for the residential market, today announced it was demonstrating the world’s first commercial-grade 3G HSPA femtocell system based on industry standards at 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona.
The news follows recent announcements of a growing ecosystem surrounding the company, including partnerships with Kineto, NEC, Netopia, Sony and Tatara.
‘Success in this market is about delivering a low-cost solution and high levels of value-added capabilities. We do both, ’said Chris Gilbert, CEO of Ubiquisys. ‘ZoneGate is a direct response to the urgent demand from mobile operators for cost-effective 3G coverage in the home and a fast, efficient way of introducing new service packages to consumers. This is why I have driven an aggressive development programme and am delighted to be demonstrating the world’s first commercial-grade femtocell system at 3GSM 2007.’
The commercial iteration of the ZoneGate access point significantly advances the femtocell business model by introducing high levels of intelligence and operator control to a standards-based system.
‘In the femtocell market, the choice is between dumb & proprietary and smart & standards-based,’ said Will Franks, CTO of Ubiquisys. ‘We’ve obviously opted for the latter and the advantages are significant. For example, our intelligent routing feature removes the burden of high volumes of data traffic from the radio access and core networks, massively reducing OPEX, as well as enabling mobiles to communicate directly with other devices in the home such as media servers and PCs.’
ZoneGate’s open applications environment also builds on industry standards to enable carriers to continuously offer new and innovative services to their customers. The system networks the capabilities of 3G mobiles and other smart devices and services in the home, including PCs, media centres, broadband, fixed line and TV-on-demand. ZoneGate software is fully upgradeable in the field, providing investment protection through seamless migration to IMS, as well as the delivery of innovative service packages that will generate new revenue streams and create differentiation for mobile operators.
ZoneGate leverages DSL standards for configuration and management, making femtocell deployment scalable to millions of devices at the lowest possible support cost per user. The system’s unique smart setup employs a SIM in the box and the Ubiquisys patented Listen Mode to deliver zero-touch installation for end users and assured call security.
A recent study from ABI Research forecasts that by 2011 there will be 102 million users of femtocell products on 32 million access points worldwide.
