The ZoneGate femtocell provides trusted homezone service access that introduces a new dimension to initiatives around home gateways.
As the femtocell, mobile core, LAN and Internet converge, events and requests coming from each network can be routed to actions and services provided by any of them. And to this heady brew of resources we also introduce session control, security, and the authentication and authorization of user services that combine resources - for example, telephony or premium content – across multiple network domains.
This convergence allows operators to develop, target & control compelling new service packages. Consider a few examples:
• Femtocells enable the transparent synchronisation of a massive store of data on the phone – such as a TV catch up service, music/movie subscriptions and podcasts – that can be consumed while mobile, without relying on capacity or coverage of the macro network. And all this can be triggered automatically as the consumer moves into homezone femtocell coverage.
• Incoming voice calls to a home number can be picked up from any mobile handset attached to the femtocell.
• If it makes sense to carriers, voice calls from the phone at home can be fulfilled over the Internet as VoIP, either to reduce the cost of delivering fixed-mobile substitution by circumventing the core network, or to enable the phone transparently to participate as a client in a peer to peer network.
• Consumers can gain remote access to devices associated with their home LANs – eg, security cameras or a media centre – via their mobiles, or from any PC (by authenticating through a mobile operator’s portal), without having to configure the home router/firewall – thus removing one of the most significant barriers to service adoption.
